Indonesia-US Tariff Negotiations Expected to Conclude by Yea

According to a statement from Indonesia's chief negotiator on December 12, 2025, the Indonesian government expects to complete ongoing tariff negotiations with the United States before the end of the year. The negotiator further revealed that an Indonesian delegation will soon depart for Washington, D.C. to conduct the next round of intensive in-person discussions aimed at reaching a final agreement.

This optimistic outlook follows recent direct communication between high-level trade officials from both sides. The statement indicated that Indonesia's chief negotiator conveyed this progress after a phone call with the U.S. Trade Representative. Speaking at an economic forum, he clearly stated: "Both parties have agreed to work toward finalizing the consensus reached under the Leaders' Declaration signed on July 22 of this year."

Despite this positive stance, the negotiation process faces challenges. Unnamed U.S. officials previously indicated that the overall trade agreement faced potential risk of collapse due to Indonesia's shifting positions on certain previously agreed commitments. In response, Jakarta stated that various talks with Washington remain ongoing, describing such "dynamic changes" in negotiations as normal. Indonesian officials simultaneously emphasized that technical teams continue final reviews and alignment of specific wording for certain provisions to ensure the agreement's final refinement and signing.

Against this backdrop, Jakarta has agreed to eliminate tariffs on over 99% of U.S. imports and remove all non-tariff barriers faced by U.S. companies in the Indonesian market. In response, the U.S. will significantly reduce its average tariff rate on Indonesian products from approximately 32% to 19%. These measures create favorable conditions for reaching a more comprehensive and stable trade arrangement by year-end.

If negotiations conclude as scheduled, the agreement is expected to provide a clearer and more favorable framework for further promoting bilateral trade and investment flows between Indonesia and the United States, with significant implications for the long-term stable development of their economic relationship.
