Green Fasteners: Reducing Carbon, Increasing Competitiveness

Green Fasteners: Reducing Carbon, Increasing Competitiveness
Driven by the dual forces of China's "Dual Carbon" strategy and the full implementation of the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), the green transformation of the fastener industry has shifted from an optional topic to a matter of survival. Data from 2023 reveals that in traditional fastener production, VOCs emissions from the pickling and electroplating stages account for 18% of similar manufacturing emissions, with average carbon emissions reaching 2.3 tons per ton of product—far exceeding international advanced levels. This high-pollution model not only faces severe environmental penalties but also strips export products of their competitiveness in international markets. Therefore, building a manufacturing system centered on "green materials, clean processes, and low-carbon energy" has become the core proposition for the industry's high-quality development.
Material Innovation as the Foundation
The industry is gradually replacing traditional high-carbon steel with low-carbon alternatives. The proportion of recycled steel usage has risen from 22% in 2022 to 30% in 2025, and it is projected to surpass 60% by 2030. The practice of the Hebei Yongnian industrial cluster is highly representative: leading local enterprises have co-established a recycled steel supply chain with steel mills, boosting the scrap fastener recycling rate to 92%. The resulting recycled steel bolts reach strength grade 8.8 while cutting carbon emissions by 45% compared to virgin steel. In the high-end sector, carbon fiber composite fasteners have achieved breakthrough applications. T800-grade carbon fiber bolts developed by Zhongfu Shenying are 60% lighter than traditional steel parts and fully recyclable. They have been mass-supplied to Goldwind's wind power equipment, reducing carbon emissions per unit by 1.2 tons. Additionally, biodegradable plastic fasteners are rapidly penetrating the medical and food packaging sectors; for instance, polylactic acid (PLA) degradable screws developed by a Zhejiang enterprise completely degrade within six months in natural environments, solving the lingering pollution issues of traditional plastic fasteners.
Clean Production Processes as the Key
Upgrading production processes is crucial for reducing carbon and pollution, with the most significant results seen in the cleaning up of surface treatment. Traditional, highly polluting cyanide electroplating is being replaced by eco-friendly technologies like chromium-free Dacromet and zinc-aluminum coatings. Ningbo Aozhan Stainless Steel Co., Ltd. invested 120 million yuan to build a chromium-free Dacromet production line. By using a combination of zinc-aluminum flakes and eco-friendly binders—and completely eliminating chromates—VOCs emissions during the coating process are near zero. The product's salt spray resistance reached 1500 hours, a threefold improvement over traditional processes, driving the market share of this technology to climb rapidly from 34% in 2025. Energy-saving retrofits in heat treatment have also yielded outstanding results; Jiangsu Shenyuan Group introduced continuous vacuum heat treatment furnaces combined with waste heat recovery systems, slashing unit energy consumption from 320 kWh/ton to 180 kWh/ton and saving 1,200 tons of standard coal annually. In cold heading, digital process optimization has pushed material utilization rates from 85% to over 95%. Zhejiang Jinyi Industrial utilized AI algorithms to optimize mold parameters, reducing material waste by 200 tons per year on a single production line.
Low-Carbon Energy Structures as the Guarantee
Leading enterprises are actively deploying clean energy alternatives. The Zhejiang Haiyan High-Strength Fastener Industrial Park has achieved full photovoltaic coverage, with clean energy accounting for 68% of the electricity used by enterprises within the park, reducing annual carbon emissions by 35,000 tons. An enterprise in Anhui built an integrated "wind power - energy storage - production" energy system, leveraging peak-valley electricity price differences to lower energy costs by 22%, becoming the industry's first "zero-carbon factory" pilot. Policy support has further accelerated this transition. The 14th Five-Year Plan for the Development of the Machinery Industry explicitly offers equipment subsidies of up to 30% for green manufacturing projects. Furthermore, of the 2.3 billion yuan in special funds issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in 2025, 27% was allocated to support green process retrofits, stimulating over 30 billion yuan in green investments across the industry.
Economic and Ecological Benefits Realized
This green transformation has already generated significant economic and ecological returns. Enterprises implementing clean production have seen a 90% reduction in the risk of environmental penalties. Moreover, their export products gain an 8%-12% price premium in the EU market due to their superior carbon footprint advantages. Projections indicate that by 2030, with the comprehensive adoption of technologies like chromium-free coatings and recycled materials, overall carbon emissions in the fastener industry will decrease by over 30%. The proportion of green products is expected to rise from 41% in 2025 to 75%, cultivating entirely new green industrial competitiveness while achieving immense ecological value.
